Adapted housing list

Some of the homes that become available for renting are adapted. Adaptations might include –

• wet area showers
• stairlifts
• through floor lifts
• ramps

When an adapted property becomes available we will offer it to someone from our adapted housing list who needs that type of property and the adaptations it has. You need to be registered on our general housing list before we can add you to our adapted housing list and you must also have had an assessment by an occupational therapist who has determined that you need an adapted property.

Arranging an assessment by an occupational therapist

If you state in your housing application form that you need adapted housing, we make a referral for an occupational therapy assessment on your behalf. You can also request an occupational therapy assessment by telephoning 01482 300 300. If you do not live in Hull, please contact your local occupational therapy team for an assessment and send us their report when you have it.

Medical priorities

If the occupational therapy assessment states that your current accommodation does not meet your needs, you may be awarded a medical priority when you are added to the adapted housing list which increases your priority on the list.

Prioritising applicants for adapted housing

Applicants are prioritised for adapted housing in accordance with our allocations policy

However, in addition to the normal prioritising rules we make sure that the adapted property is offered to a person who needs that type of property and the adaptations it has. This means that the person at the top of the list might not always be offered a property that becomes available if that property has adaptations that they do not need, or it is the incorrectly sized property.

Offers and refusals

If you have been added to the adapted housing list with a medical priority and you refuse two offers of accommodation your priority will be removed and you will move to a lower band.  If you refuse a further two offers your application on the adapted housing list will be frozen for a period of six months.

If you have been added to the adapted housing list without a priority (because your current home meets your needs) and you refuse two offers of accommodation from this list your application on the adapted housing list will be frozen for a period of six months.

When your application on the adapted housing list is frozen you will not be considered for any properties from this list.  You can still bid for advertised properties although, please refer to the information below about when an offer might not be made.

Advertised adapted properties

Sometimes we might advertise an adapted property for applicants to bid for. We usually do this if we have not been able to match it to anyone on our adapted housing list. The property advert tells you who can bid and in most cases you still have to have a need for the adaptations to be offered the property.  Adaptations cannot be removed from a property after you have moved in.

If you need additional adaptations putting into a property in order for it to meet your needs we may not offer you that property unless it is the most financially viable, reasonable and practicable option for the Housing Service and makes the best use of our stock.

We don’t remove adaptations from a property after you have moved in.
